Disposing Flower Delivery Wrapping

All wrapping used in Bituin’s daily flower delivery arrangements is plastic free and can be diverted from landfill!

Sustainable flower bouquet wrapping

Receiving flowers is always a delight, and part of that joy comes from the beautiful and aesthetically pleasing packaging. However, it can be a struggle figuring out how to dispose of all the packaging in the most sustainable way possible, with so many options like recycling, general waste, and composting.

Here at Bituin, we've made it easy for you. We've created a simple guide on how to responsibly dispose of each component of our flower packaging. The best part? Every Bituin wrapping item is plastic-free, and we're committed to keeping them out of landfills. This is a crucial part of our efforts to make a positive impact on sustainability and our community across Melbourne.

We've categorised how to dispose of each component based on the bins you can place them in. Additionally, we've included information about our environmentally friendly sourcing practices. Please note that this guide is general in nature, and there may be specific instructions or requirements from your local council.

You or the recipient won’t need to memorise this information – we always include an abbreviated version of these instructions on tags made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper.

Recycling Bin

  • Brown/kraft paper
  • Sticker
  • Tags
  • Bituin message cards

Wherever possible, we procure our paper products from 100% post-consumer recycled paper. However, in cases where recycled paper materials are not readily available, we take care to ensure that the paper originates from pulp derived from responsibly managed forests - certified by reputable organisations such as  certified by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Our tags and Bituin greeting cards are crafted from 100% post-consumer recycled paper by local, sustainably-focused printing companies. Additionally, our stickers are made from pulp that is certified by FSC. The ink used for printing on these items is non-toxic and can easily be de-inked in recycling processes. We also use unbleached and undyed kraft paper that is either recycled or produced from FSC or PEFC certified pulp. This diverse approach to sourcing "sustainable" paper demonstrates the various avenues through which environmentally responsible paper can be procured.

Organic, Green, or Compost Bin

  • Flowers
  • Foliage
  • Twine
  • Compostable bag
  • Tissue paper

We use natural white or brown twine, typically made of Jute, which is a natural fibre derived from the Jute plant. This makes it suitable for disposal in the organic, green, or compost bins. The tissue paper we use is acid-free, originating from either recycled paper or FSC certified pulp. Any printing on the tissue uses soy-based inks can be disposed of in the organic, green, or compost bins as it degrades rapidly. We proudly source our printed tissue from NoIssue Co, and are part of the Eco-alliance on sustainable packaging.

The compostable bag (provided with flowers that are not ordered with a vase) are actually dog waste bags! These bags are constructed from plant-based material, making them entirely plastic-free, and are printed with soy-based inks. They biodegrade within 90 days in your backyard and are certified to meet Australian standards (AS4736 and AS5810).
